[Tom Edelen of Central Lutheran Church and the Rainbow Circle shares part of his story]
With the Reconciling in Christ celebration last Sunday and Twin Cities Pride this weekend, I felt called to share a bit of my journey.
I was raised in a loving, conservative Lutheran home where I found deep peace in the church and stayed actively involved in ministry. Over the years, God led me to serve as a missionary educator, youth minister, and church planter in Venezuela, a gang and Hispanic outreach director, a youth pastor, and later, as a principal in a Lutheran school.
Yet even from an early age, I sensed something was different. In my early twenties (through much prayer, and yes, shame and struggle), I came to understand and accept that I am gay. It has not been an easy road. I’ve faced rejection from Christian organizations and ongoing challenges within my own family.
But there is good news in my story.
God placed incredible people in my life, people who helped me see that I am exactly as I was created to be: fearfully and wonderfully made. This journey toward self-acceptance has shaped me, strengthened me, and given me the courage to stand alongside others walking similar paths.
Nearly ten years ago, dear friends, Christopher Haug and Karl Starr, invited me to Central. I’m so grateful I said yes. From that moment, I knew this was a special place. The love and acceptance I’ve experienced here from pastors, staff, and all of you has meant everything.
You see it the moment you arrive: “You are welcome. No exceptions.” You hear it in our mission: “Exploring the promise of God for all.” And you live it every day.
Because of you, people from all walks of life find a home here. Because of you, I stood in our sanctuary nearly five years ago and married my husband, Ken. Because of you, we have a place to belong and to serve. Thank you for embracing us, and for creating a space where so many can experience God’s expansive love and acceptance.
May God bless each of you on your journey. Happy Pride.
With gratitude, Tom Edelen
