Volunteer at Central

Everyone is welcome. No exceptions. This is not only an invitation to Central’s worshipping community, but an invitation into a community of service. A common thread you will hear, and hopefully feel, is that this is a place that practices radical hospitality for all who enter. There are a number of ways to volunteer, namely in the areas of worship, faith formation, the Restoration Center, administration, and hospitality.

Who Can Volunteer?

Anyone who wants to can volunteer at Central! If you:

  • have a gift to share
  • are looking to experience God
  • want to find what brings you joy
  • want to bring joy to others
  • are looking to fulfill community service
  • want to serve in an area where you are comfortable
  • want to reach out and try something new

You can make that first step by stopping at the Welcome Desk, calling the Church Office, or sending an email to Karen Knox. We will help you find a place through conversations, tours, and engagement. You won’t have to explore these opportunities alone; we will walk with you.

Opportunities to serve

Different seasons call for more help in specific areas of the church and our life together. But all year round, our volunteers are providing services and hospitality. Here are a few areas that are looking for some extra support right now.

Prayer Chain

The Prayer Chain prays for the needs of the congregation. Volunteers receive a weekly email of people and situations to include in prayer.

Quilters for Lutheran World Relief (LWR)

Central’s quilters are an important part of our overall global mission. No sewing skills required to join!  Spend time with friends, make new ones, create something beautiful, and enjoy treats. Whether you are a seasoned quilter, want to learn, or want to witness this ministry in action, you’re invited the first Wednesday and Thursday of the month anytime from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Come and see!

Ushers

Ushers are dedicated individuals with a heart for hospitality. They create a welcoming and engaging worship experience. We will work with your schedule to find a time to help. No experience is necessary.

Creation Care Ambassadors

Central Cares for Creation (C3) Ministry Team encourages us to respect, conserve, and care for God’s creation. Restore. Reuse. Recycle. We need volunteers to serve as ambassadors for community meals on Mondays and Thursdays.

Mobile Free Store

Central operates a Mobile Free Store on the third Tuesday of each month. The Mobile Free Store is located at 651 Nicollet Mall inside the DID location during winter and outside during the summer from 3 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. This once-a-month experience provides an opportunity for folks to get a taste of our larger store at the church. If you’re in the neighborhood or out for a walk, come and see!

Special Events Greeters

We host special events throughout the year (concerts, lectures, funerals, etc.) and welcome visitors. As a volunteer you can listen to beautiful music, thought-provoking lectures, and support families on a difficult day. You can choose which events and times to help.

Ushers for Holy Week and Easter

If you are interested in ushering for the Holy Week and Easter services, there is a sign-up sheet available at the Welcome Desk. There is a spot for new members and interested guests, and families, too!  Beginning the weekend of March 7-8, there will be an usher at the Welcome Desk who can provide more information and answer questions. Or call the church office at 612-870-4416.
