A Season of Discipleship

We are now in the long and abundant season (called the time after Pentecost) in the life of the church. The season is defined by the Pentecost event, the Holy Spirit sending the disciples out into the world to share the good news of God’s steadfast welcome and unconditional love. It is a season of discipleship in all its forms and nuances.

In these early days of the time after Pentecost, we turn to a book by Karoline Lewis for conversation and a daily prayer retreat. Her book, Belonging: 5 Keys to Unlock Your Potential as a Disciple, is a wonderful way to begin the summer and this long season of discipleship. Dr. Lewis defines five keys that can ground us in God’s abundant call for our personal discipleship: discomfort, wonder, trust, letting go, and witness. The book is an extended reflection on Jesus and his encounter with the woman at the well, and her response to his love and grace.

There are more details about the book and the dates for the conversations in the enews and Spirit. For now, perhaps ponder which of the five keys immediately resonates with you as you listen for God’s call and abundance in your life today. We will listen for these five keys within this weekend’s gospel lesson as the early days of this Pentecost season unfold.

Yours in Christ Jesus,
Pastor Peter
