One of my favorite scripture study tools of all time is to look at the verbs. Verbs are underestimated in a culture that is very focused on what we think and how our mind is the most important part of who we are. If you know me at all, you know that I am very concerned with what we do with our bodies and how we use our bodies in accompanying our neighbors who have needs.
In the story of the ascension from Luke, Jesus speaks to the disciples about what is written and then opens their minds. This is just the beginning for Jesus. He knows that we have to have some kind of understanding before we can move. How many times have you heard, “You better think before you act!” Jesus reminds them that they are to witness. They are to proclaim. They are being sent; in a minute. So, Jesus tells them to stay until they have been clothed with power from on high. Once Jesus leads them outside of town and blesses them. He withdraws. They worship him, return to Jerusalem and bless God.
Wait for the verbs next week. They will get even better! We too can pay attention to the balance of active and passive verbs in our daily lives and strive to receive the good that God is offering in order that we can move alongside our neighbors so that everyone can experience the love of God.
Shalom,
Pastor Melissa
