There is wisdom in the church’s celebration of the Holy Trinity this weekend. We pause to be grounded in all that happened last weekend on Pentecost. The Holy Spirit came upon all gathered, breaking down barriers in understanding, and sending all out to share the good news of God’s expansive and steadfast welcome. This church season (called the time after Pentecost) continues until Thanksgiving Day. So yes, it is a long and expansive season.
The wisdom of pausing this weekend is that we take the time to ponder God as creator, redeemer, and sustainer. This weekend, we remember the gifts given through the word and water in baptism. God names us as beloved, in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Giving thanks for baptism grounds us in the promise of belonging. We share that good news at every baptism and confirmation, singing: “You belong to Christ, in whom you have been set free. Alleluia.”
The Holy Spirit’s awe-inspiring presence remains with us now, always, “to the end of the age,” as Jesus promises in Matthew’s Gospel lesson. You do belong to Christ, in whom you have been baptized. Alleluia!
Yours in Christ Jesus,
Pastor Peter
