Emmanuel, God With Us

The prophet Isaiah foretold the birth of Jesus: “Therefore the Lord will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son and shall name him Emmanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). We remember and give thanks that Emmanuel means “God with us.” We give thanks that God’s home is among us, as John wrote in Revelation: “See, the home of God is among mortals. God will dwell with them; they will be God’s peoples, and God will be with them and be their God” (Revelation 21:3).

In Isaiah and Revelation, we hear the invitation to “look” and “see.” On Christmas Eve, we visualize that manger scene, that Mary “gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn” (Luke 2:7). We see that Jesus has come to make his home with us in love, grace, and hope.

Thank you for all the ways you look and see that God’s home is among all of God’s peoples. Thank you for all the ways you make a home for your family, friends, and neighbors. Thank you for all the ways you seek to make this church home a place that welcomes all, no exceptions. Words cannot fully express our gratitude for all your homing work here at Central as you decorate, sing, ring, set the altar table, lead worship, serve meals, sort clothes, teach children and confirmands, quilt, knit, pray, study, discuss, visit and call, welcome, usher, host, lead, and serve in countless ways.

Merry Christmas!

In the name of God with us, Jesus Christ,
