Lutheran Community Center and Clinic

South Sudan

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in South Sudan is the most recent global mission partnership with the ELCA, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. At the invitation of the people of South Sudan, and grounded in the principles of accompaniment, the Evangelical Lutheran Church Africa Mission in South Sudan was born as this new nation was formed. In November of 2016 the ground was broken for a Lutheran center and clinic in Juba, in an area that lacks basic health and education services. The center is a place for the community to find hope by providing classes, including computer training, and a health clinic – which is the country’s first and only place for fistula surgery for women and girls.

The clinic started as a way to serve the primary health care needs of our neighbors. It grew over the years, adding a surgical theater (operating room) and a 12-bed maternity ward. Services include clinical consultation, lab diagnostics, pharmacy, ultrasound, antenatal clinic, maternity, HIV/AIDS voluntary testing and counseling, well-child clinic with routine immunizations, and semi-annual camps for obstetric fistula repair. We collaborate on the ground with partners including Lutheran World Federation, Barbara May Foundation, Medicins Sans Frontieres, Government of South Sudan, and others. Our hardworking staff provide important care to an under-served and fast-growing population on the margin of Juba.
