Here in Minnesota, we’ve been blessed with a relatively mild and beautiful summer—cool mornings, clear skies, and just enough rain to keep the grass green. It’s the kind of weather that makes you grateful to be outside. But even as we enjoy this gift, we’re mindful that elsewhere, many are not so fortunate.
From southern Europe to parts of the U.S., record-breaking heat has brought wildfires, health warnings, and closed attractions. In just 10 days last year, 2,300 people died across 12 European cities, with researchers attributing 65% of those deaths to climate change.
And it’s not just heat. Flooding in Texas this year displaced families and damaged homes. Across the globe, we’re seeing more intense storms, longer droughts, and wildfires that grow harder to contain. These events most deeply impact the vulnerable: seniors, low-income families, those without shelter or cooling.
But as people of faith, we are not powerless. We are called to be stewards of creation and caretakers of one another.
What Can We Do?
- Be a source of shade. Check on neighbors during heat waves and emergencies.
- Live lightly. Drive less, use less energy, eat more plant-based meals.
- Conserve water. Use water wisely—especially during drought. Install low-flow fixtures and fix leaks. Harvest rainwater where permitted.
- Improve energy efficiency. Insulate your home, install LED bulbs, or use programmable thermostats. Cut emissions and lower energy bills.
- Use your voice. Support clean energy and policies that protect the vulnerable.
- Pray and act. Let your care for creation be a visible expression of your faith and love for others.
