Celebrating 100 Years: the Groundbreaking of the Central Sanctuary

This week marked a significant anniversary in the history of Central Lutheran. One hundred years ago on July 18, 1926, the congregation processed out of “Old Central” onto an empty plot of ground on the corner of 12th Street South and 3rd Avenue South to break ground on the new “Cathedral” Sanctuary.

Here’s text taken from the dedication brochure recounting the events:

“On February 1, 1926, the Board of Trustees decided to call for bids on the plans and specifications as furnished by the architects. On March 10, 1926, the bids were opened. The lowest bidders were: The National Contracting Company, general contract; David Husron and Company, heating, ventilating and plumbing; W. 0. Hartig Electric Company, electrical work.

On July 9, 1926, the Board of Trustees entered into contracts with these firms. The Seventh Sunday after Trinity, July 18, 1926, the Congregation proceeded out of the old church in solemn procession, and ground was broken on the new site, in the Name of the Triune God. On Wednesday, July 21st, the same year, the contractors began excavating. The work proceeded uninterruptedly through the rest of 1926 and all of 1927.

The First Sunday in Advent, November 28, 1926, the cornerstone was laid, in the Name of the Triune God.”
