The Fine Arts Ministry Team decided this Lent to pull art from our own collection to put on a display for all the people who enter our building. Under the theme of Lent, “Common Elements of Home,” we thought it would be good to highlight the art that gives us a vision of The Last Supper. Chez and Karla Moline collected many pieces of art during their travels in ministry with this theme. We had so many to choose from. What a blessing! What you will find in the South Entry Hall and in the Fireside Lounge are from many different cultures.
We have displayed John August Swanson’s Last Supper in which the tones are warm and all the shapes round, so it feels inviting and warm and homey. He created art out of his experience of growing up with a Latina mom and a Swedish father in California. From his website: “His hand-crafted serigraphs are printed in up to 89 colors of transparent and opaque inks, which overlap to create rich and detailed imagery.”
We displayed a piece from He Qi, a Chinese Christian artist who lived in Stillwater briefly. Many of his pieces can be seen in our collection as well as in many Christian publications. His print we have on display is actually after the resurrection, when Jesus eats fish in Emmaus in the company of the travelers who invited him to stay.
Other pieces are from Leonardo Da Vinci (print), Drew Hammon’s (original) Feeding of the 5000, Sadao Watanabe (woodblock print), Salvador Dali (print), and an amazing Last Supper printed on fabric where there is corn and tomatoes on the table. We do not know the artist, but it is striking.
