“Where has the summer gone?” Most of us ask this question every year at this time. Of course, the answer each year is often the same. “Summer has come and gone too fast. And it seems as I get older, it comes and goes even faster.” We often lament this time of year more than the other seasonal changes. The short summer full of growth and bounty will now quickly come to an end. The slower pace of life will soon give way to the bustle of autumn activity. Return to the routines and traditional activities are before us. Harvest season is before us.
Every seasonal change highlights a marking in time, a reminder that life itself is change. Each of us is part of an ongoing cycle, from birth to death, on a quest to use our time wisely, grow in our Christian faith, live fully, and hope to leave a meaningful impact on others and the world. This week’s Hebrew text reminds us, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Amidst the joys, sorrows, and uncertainties of life, trusting God’s constant and consistent care becomes more important as each cycle of life passes. “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.” Jesus’ earthly life and ministry point to the strength and intimate care of God with us. Faith is growing to trust this never-changing presence that is around us and our spiritual foundation.
Although we will miss summer’s end, the return to autumn routine and tradition renews our life together. A new church year and program season strengthen our foundation in Christ’s unfailing grace and love. As the challenges and changes of life continue, our life together is yet another constant opportunity to praise God through worship, community building, and service.
An unchanging God is a powerful thing! Thanks be to God for another new season of opportunity to celebrate God’s love with one another and the world around us.
