Central is going on a Sacred Sites Tour

In the work we continue to do around racial healing, we are partnering with Rev. Jim Bear Jacobs and the Minnesota Council of Churches for a Sacred Sites Tour on Wednesday, August 28.

Healing Minnesota Stories is an effort to create understanding and healing between Native American and non-Native people, particularly those in various faith communities. Native people have suffered deep trauma over many years, losing their land, language, and culture, and all who call Minnesota home are the lesser for it. While many people and institutions contributed to that trauma, it happened with the full participation of Christian churches. We all still need healing and churches have a role to play in healing.

As part of Healing Minnesota Stories’ effort to create dialogue, understanding, and healing between Native and non-Native peoples, Minnesota Council of Churches offers Sacred Site Tours of the Twin Cities area. These tours aim to create greater awareness and understanding of the Dakota people, the original people of this area, who too often are invisible in their homeland. The tour includes information on Dakota history, culture, and sacred sites, as well as the oppression and genocide they faced, and ultimately their exile.

Details:

• We will leave Central on Wednesday, August 28 at noon
• We will board the bus that will take us to three different sites and back
• It is recommended that people wear sturdy shoes
• Bring along plenty of water and a small snack
• The tour will take approximately four hours
• People who may have difficulty standing may want to bring lawn chairs
• Expect to be on some uneven surfaces and dirt/gravel paths
