Fred Stechmann writes, "I was born in Robbinsdale, Minnesota and see myself as “child of the sixties” growing up with all the National Geographic magazines I could get my hands on. Those photographs always transported me to places I believed I would never see.
"My photographic beginnings began very impulsively. When I was 18, I attended Wartburg College, in Waverly, Iowa for one year. Not a place for this kid from Robbinsdale...too much farm…too much corn! I did, however, become acquainted with one of school photographers who I “assisted” in the darkroom loading film, learning how to develop and “make a decent print.” Not a pretty beginning, but he was patient and I was eager to learn. That was forty-seven years ago. After many workshops and many camera formats, I continue with my first love of film and have a love/hate relationship with digital cameras.
"Photography always changes our lives. My photographic venue has emphasis around things that are passing or moving away from us. I know that nothing in this world is permanent so I have taken sometimes brief, sometimes more protracted time to look, love and appreciate those simple things around us. Simple things, nothing too complicated to clutter the experience."
Note: Fred Stechmann is a member of Central Lutheran and has contributed many photographs of church life. Several of his images were used on the photo banners for this website: photo of children on Our Church page; pots and pans on Serve page; and altar vestment on Home page. Thank you, Fred for your many contributions!
Chillon Leach is a St. Paul artist working in many markets and mediums. She graduated in 1983 from the University of MN/Twin Cities with degrees in painting/drawing and illustration and is currently a member of the St. Paul Art Collective, Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association, and CIVA (Christians in the Visual Arts). She teaches art as prayer exercises at Catholic Eldercare in NE Mpls., presents at church forums, and creates one-of-a-kind liturgical stoles. Chillon actively shows in many secular and religious exhibitions. "Enjoying a full and sometimes experimental range of art supplies enables me to create fresh ideas and to remain stimulated. Different responses and emotions require different mediums and techniques. Creating art in this way also provides positive emotional, spiritual, and artistic growth. My religious paintings, drawings, and liturgical stoles reflect the layers of spiritual energy present in Christian faith. Work often explores themes of light and dark, with Christian hope being prominent. As a Lutheran, I am also inspired by other Christian church services." www.chillonleach.com

JOHN AUGUST SWANSON makes his home in Los Angeles, California, where he was born in 1938. He paints in oil, watercolor, acrylic and mixed media, and is an independent printmaker of limited edition serigraphs, lithographs and etchings. His art reflects the strong heritage of storytelling he inherited from his Mexican mother and Swedish father. John Swanson's narrative is direct and easily understood. He addresses himself to human values, cultural roots, and his quest for self-discovery through visual images. These include Bible stories and social celebrations such as attending the circus, the concert, and the opera. He also tells of everyday existence, of city and country walks, of visits to the library, the train station or the schoolroom. All his parables optimistically embrace life and one's spiritual transformation. For more information about the artist, visit www.johnaugustswanson.com
"First, I pray. I ask God to guide every brush stroke and use me according to his will. When I begin painting, I have no idea what the outcome will be. It's like a spontaneous dance. I focus on texture, color and shapes, expressing my feelings at a given moment. In fact, I often dance while painting. Creating art is such a joyful experience that I can't seem to stand still. Bright colors and thick paint are used to express themes related to spirituality and human relationships, especially those of community, hope and love." DeAnne L Parks
