Welcome to the 2009 Churchwide Assembly and to Our Neighborhood!
The people of Central Lutheran Church are delighted to welcome you to the 2009 Churchwide Assembly of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in this, our 90th Anniversary Year. We also welcome you to “our neighborhood!” (For those unfamiliar with Minneapolis, Central is located right across the street from the Convention Center.)
Our founders were very clear that this church should not exist so much for itself but for the opportunity it presents for service to others. From this strategic location Central has carried out a remarkable legacy of service to the city and the world in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. We continue to seek new ways to be engaged in this vital ministry of hospitality and service as we move into God’s marvelous future!
During those years, Central has had the privilege to be an integral part of Lutheran history as we have welcomed “the whole church” on several occasions. These have included the historic 1957 Lutheran World Federation Assembly, the 1961 constituting convention of the American Lutheran Church and the 1995 Churchwide Assembly of the ELCA—all of which had events both at the neighboring Minneapolis Auditorium, its successor the Minneapolis Convention Center and Central.
This year, once again, Central is privileged to host many of the Assembly events/activities being offered to those attending. Through the links on this page you will find information about these opportunities, including the Assembly worship service on Saturday, August 22, which will be held at Central.
I also invite you to stop over at anytime during the Assembly to spend some quiet time in the largest cathedral-style Lutheran sanctuary in North or South America, to enjoy our campus hospitality, walk the prayer labyrinth, or listen to our still-new (2006) carillon. Our doors will be open wide during the Assembly and the people of Central will be on hand to extend a warm welcome.
We are preparing for your visit and we are glad you are coming! Welcome!
In Christ,
The Rev. Richard A. Nelson
