Report of the Personnel Committee

by Bill Masche, Chair

The personnel committee is established by the Constitution and By-Laws of Central Lutheran Church to act as an advisor to the Senior Pastor on Personnel matters.  Appointed by and serving at the pleasure of the church council, the committee represents the congregation in implementation of employee policies consistent with Senior Pastor and council direction, decisions and goals.

We as a committee, strive to create a business-like atmosphere within a Christian environment for all staff.   The role of church staff is vital in carrying out the “Mission and Vision of Central” to all who visit our campus.  Each day small decisions are made, relationships are created and the work of our congregation is carried out by staff, each one in their own way.  Within the power of every staff member is the opportunity to enhance the work of the church in how we relate to members and guests.

The leadership of Pastor Nelson has not only brought revitalization to the church office environment but also a sense of purpose to each individual, carrying out whatever their responsibilities may be.  The leadership of department heads has created increased productivity, quality of work and accomplishment.  Staff retreats, team building, and training are intentional and there is now always a place for fun and joy in coming to work at Central! Thanks and blessings to all staff.

Committee Activities and Accomplishments

•Annual performance evaluations and compensation reviews are essential to employee satisfaction and motivation.  At their annual review, employees are also asked to participate, adding discussion and goal setting both personally and for their position and how it relates to other staff and the church as a whole.

•The Personnel Manual is reviewed and revised if needed to maintain its relevance and value.

•Job Descriptions are reviewed and periodically changed or revised to meet church goals.  This past year, the part-time positions of internal and external communications were merged into one full-time position.  The committee worked closely with Pastor Nelson on the position description and members of the committee participated in the interview process.

•The committee took an active role in advising council and Pastor Nelson on personnel budget issues for the 2009-10 year.  Members of the committee felt strongly that existing positions should be maintained even in our challenging financial economy.  The recommendation was made that there should be no increase in the 2009-2010

personnel budget.  This recommendation, accepted by council, was seen as a measure of protecting existing staff as well as allowing Central to maintain successful programs and mission.

On behalf of the committee, thank you to all members of Central Lutheran Church for the ongoing respect, support and kindness you show to all church staff.  May we continue to acknowledge their gifts as they perform “God’s Work” for our congregation.
